World Leader Pretend: The Sticker
Some of you may already know about my wrangling with the publisher over the cover art for the book. I lost the battle, of course. And now I have to live with the damn thing. (Don't get me wrong, the art is perfect for an L. Ron Hubbard book.)
I decided to be proactive, though, and create my own cover for the book. The wife and I teamed up with sticker artist DAve of San Francisco to produce a sticker that can be placed over the original paperback cover of the book. The early results are so fun! And so much more telling about the wackiness of the novel's pages.

I just wish the publisher "got it." What's with people these days, anyway? Even the book dorks are corporate.

I laughed my ass off at this. In a good way.
Did ya like it? Did ya like it?
I love your cover rendition. The publisher's version is truly horrible. What were they possibly thinking?
In their defense, they had a way they thought they could get the book out there that was different from my own artistic sensibilities. They succeeded in getting the book on the shelves, something I would have never been able to do. The sticker cover, to me anyway, says more about the humor and wildness of what's between the pages, which is why I like it. It also gives me something fun to do, like ride all over Portland on my bike putting stickers up and narrowly avoiding the police...
Sweet. I totally symphathize, having got stuck with this for my second book, which wasn't about printer interface cables, but the ambiguous relationship Americans have had with gambling in general and the 1961 Wire Act in particular.
You've really got the right idea with the sticker cover. I mean, if you can pick a skin for your media player, why not for your books?
Dave,
Oof, yeah, that's bad. I mean, how hard would it have been to put up a Suicide King? (None of this is to mention that you're not going to get much of a shock from snipping a parallel cable.)
Good topic, though. My friend Marty Cortinas wrote Beat the Odds: The Smart Player’s Guide to Online Poker. The online gambling thing is huge and people really don't know what to think about it.
i am going to buy the book jsut because of this and want to know how to get your sticker cover. i love the idea!
truly sticking it to the man!
you are awesome.
Order the sticker here.
OMG, those other covers were hilarious. I really feel for you and I'm digging the sticker cover you've had made. COOL! Best of luck!
